Caergwrle boast five players who are ex-Chester league individual champions, John Gorman, Haydn Parry, Dave Bennion, Bob Clark and Dave Jameson. Also there are three internationally rated players, Dave Bennion, Dave Jameson and John Gorman.

When Caergwrle started up some Widnes players were used, Gareth Ellis and Mal French at first, and later on Harry Draper and Ian Campbell. Gareth helps to run chessmaze international who sell chess equipment, click here for the chessmaze website. Due to chess commitments they no longer play for us, and also commitments to various bars around the north-west of England.

Dave Dickson lives in Caergwrle as does Mike Friel, and David Parker-Williams. John Bourne lives in the neighbouring village of Abermorddu, and Dave Bennion lives down the road in Cefn-Y-Bedd.

Caergwrle play in two different leagues, the Chester league and the Wirral league. There is a rule that players are not allowed to play for two different clubs in the same league. Some players play for different clubs in different leagues. Dave Jameson is captain of Colwyn Bay and Llandudno and plays for Caergwrle in the Wirral league. Wrexham players John Canham and Brian Davies used to play in the Wirral league.

Welsh Championship

Dave Jameson first entered the Welsh championship in 2005 scoring 1½/5, then in 2007 scoring 3/6. He completed the seven rounds in 2008 with a score of 4/7 and finishing equal sixth.

Dave Bennion's first entry to the Welsh championship was 1991 in Cwmfelinfach, Gwent scoring 3/6, a member of Wrexham chess club at the time, Caergwrle chess club did not exist. There was another fifty per cent sore in Ogmore-by-Sea in 1993 with 3½/7 after losing the first three games. In the 1999 championship there was a score of 2/7 finishing last in the field of fifteen. After a period of bad health Dave scored 2½/7 in the 2004 championship. The 2006 championship was the best coming equal fifth with a score of 4½/7, then in 2007 there was another fifty per cent score with 3½/7. Dave scored 2/7 in the 2008 championship.
