Wirral League

Caergwrle won the Wirral league in the 2008-2009 season, so we all think that it is a wonderful league now, going the whole season unbeaten.

Dave Bennion was left playing after the other four games had been drawn. He was losing material, the game was lost and with it the match.

Bob Clark drew on top board, while Marvin Hayes making his debut for Caergwrle lost in an ending. Dave Parker-Williams also lost in an ending leaving John Gorman and Dave Bennion the two players still left playing. Dave had been winning earlier in the game but a draw was agreed with both sides short of time. John Gorman mated his opponent with seconds left on his clock.

The results have been bad since the move to Pen-y-ffordd. We are not sure whether it is a jinx or if it just provides us with a good excuse for losing. This was the first win for any Caergwrle team this season Marvin Hayes drew on bottom board in an even game whilst Bob Clark drew with reigning Chester league champion John Blore. After John Gorman won and John Povall drew the score was 2½-1½. Dave Bennion was the lsat to finish. Dave won the exchange and his opponent later resigned.

The two sides had met the previous week in the Wirral first division, resulting in a 3-2 win for Chester. Caergwrle were without Bob Clark this time while Chris Doran was available for Chester. Caergwrle were whitewashed, John Gorman and Dave Bennion lost material in their games whilst Marvin Hayes, Dave Parker-Williams and Dave Dickson also lost.

Caergwrle were well beaten by a strong Wrexham side. Neville Layhe was the only one to get anything, drawing against Brian Davies. This was the final game at the Derby Arms Caergwrle before the move to the British Legion, Pen-Y-Ffordd.
